The proposed Australian Government clampdown on smut just got a whole lot broader, as news emerged of a ban on small breasts and female ejaculation in adult material.

The end result of this widening of the censor’s net could be the addition of millions of websites to the internet filter now being proposed.

Breasts came under the spotlight a year ago, as Senators Barnaby Joyce and Guy Barnett commenced a campaign against publicly available porn. Rounding up magazines from corner shops and filling stations, Senator Joyce claimed that publications featuring small-breasted women were encouraging paedophilia.

Not that I don't agree that itty-bitty tatas are a crying shame, but I don't think they should be illegal.  It's just that I don't think I could go to a country with people so stupid they think that small breasts somehow encourage pedophilia.

Come now...

It's very unkind to comment on a politician's legitimate medical condition this way...

In 1950, a person who was behaving oddly stood a good chance of being hospitalized. It might be for observation for a few days or a few weeks. If the doctors decided that this person was mentally ill, they would be committed, perhaps for a few months, perhaps longer. Hospital space was always at a premium, so generally, if someone was kept, there was a reason for it. The notion that large numbers of sane people were kept for no reason just has not survived my research efforts.

Brings to mind, the senseless bloody murder of Tim McLean.  And the shockingly bucolic treatment granted to his killer - a man who violently stabbed a total stranger, sawed off his head and shovelled bits and pieces of the body down his gullet during a 4-hour standoff with police.

Much like my friend Skippy, I don't much care for when a big-news tragedy hits and the hacks start lining up to parse every angle and split every hair.  Case in point, Victor Davis Hanson - who I do honestly like as a rule - starts his recent statement on the political firestorm surrounding the shootings in Tuscon Arizona, with this catchy, yet disingenuous throw-away opener...

Very few Americans are fans of both The Communist Manifestoand Mein Kamp, as the Tucson killer, 22-year-old Jared Lee Loughner, apparently was.

Not to ruin a perfectly inflammatory insinuation, but when you take into account the entire list from which these texts were cherry picked, it seems as though the pundit who decries those trying to score political points for one side of the aisle or t'other has deliberately selected for mention only the books that would fit his chosen narrative and elicit the most favorable agreement from his audience.

Sharing the killer's list of faves with these notable fascist and communist tomes, are such firebrand titles as The Wizard of Oz, To Kill A Mockingbird and We The Living - the last of which is most noted for being the virulently anti-communist screed authored by the notoriously anti-left wing Ayn Rand.

In fact, perusing the whole list gives one no further insight into Jared Loughner than the impression of a muddled, confused and contradictory mind.  This can likely be attributed to the fact that whatever else he may be, Jared Loughner is a crackpot.  Which leads me to wonder why anyone who is still in at least marginal control of their own faculties, would think that any logic, motive or sentiment can be garnered from an examination of the guy's reading habits.

He is insane.  The things he does only make sense to him, and the voices in his head.  Therefore, it makes perfect sense to hold in equally high esteem both Mein Kampf and Peter Pan - but only to him.  Anyone else who professes to see some obscure logic, or who claims to have divined some masterful grasp of the kook's inner psyche from the list of his bathroom reading, is either equally addled with mental illness or is simply taking a few cheap shots in the dark as a way to pander to the base under the guise of the moral high road.

A lot has been made of Sarah Palin's now infamous graphic showing which Congressmen her PAC was "targeting" for defeat using cross hairs. Politics uses war imagery -- just as any cause does ("war on cancer" "battle against X" and the "fight against Y"). I just don't see a connection between the cross hairs and shooting Gabrielle Giffords and think you have to be an idiot to make such a connection...

Idiot is a charitable way to put it.  I somehow doubt I'm the only person who considered the possibility that Warren typed his post with only one hand.  In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if he types every post that way.

I strongly suspect the furor is the whole point.

Our reaction makes that point far more eloquently than any bonfire could ever do.  The bad guys are taking notes and you can be sure they don't include brownie points for cultural sensitivity.

Christianity has its fair share of kooks who use offensive stunts and fiery rhetoric to get attention and extend the reach of their message, but they truly are the fringe of the faith.  That’s why people like Fred Phelps and Terry Jones can only muster crowds the size of a regional Bridge club.

One look at Islam tells us, as far as furtherance of the faith and public image goes, the fringe are the ones truly in charge.  Pick any prominent Muslim leader and quotes can be attributed to him expounding on the virtues of child marriage, giving parameters on the proper ritual for sex with goats, and calling for the righteously violent slaughter of just about everyone else.  And they’re not just talking about it, but making it happen whenever they get the chance.

From “uncovered catmeat” Hilali, to Abu Hamza, Mullah Omar, Ayatollah Khomeini or Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, none of these are marginalized fringe characters.  They are all prominent, influential figureheads of a faith which holds violent oppression and submission to god as its primary tenets.

I challenge anybody to find me Islam’s Billy Graham.  There simply isn’t one and if there were, he would either be leading prayers at a mosque in goat-hump nowhere, or in an Iranian prison.

Islam is a world-wide Jonestown phenomenon.  The radical element is the faith and your average “moderate Muslim” has more in common with the Kool-Aid guzzling kooks than with any typical Catholic or Protestant quilt-maker.

Dispensing with the delusional caveat that the radicals in Islam are just the fringe would be our first major victory in this war.  Right now, it’s the ground on which we teeter, on the verge of the abyss.

The Schalit family on Thursday asked for assistance from international left-wing activists due to arrive in the Gaza Strip later in the day.

If the left-wing activists pressure Hamas to allow international organizations to bring letters and food packages to Gilad Schalit, the kidnapped soldier's family has agreed to support the international expedition's attempt to dock, Army Radio reported Thursday.

Lawyer Nick Kaufman presented the offer to the organization "Free Gaza," one of the organizers of the flotilla headed for Gaza, which promptly refused the offer.

"We are disappointed that the organizers of the flotilla have refused to also provide basic humanitarian assistance to our son, who has been held in Gaza four years in contradiction of international law," said the Schalit family.

Apparently there are some people who "Free Gaza" are not interested in freeing.

The voice of Islamic reason

Every morning, on the way in to school, my kids and I listen to John Oakley on the radio.  He usually has good guests on (John Bolton is a Wednesday morning regular - my fav!), and occasionally, he has a spectacular dust-up or two, that make the traffic reports and the commercials all worthwhile.

Yesterday was one of those days.

Let me just start by saying that Barbara Kay is a great listen at all times, and the subject of building a Mosque at the site of 9/11 is one of great interest to me and my kin.  But listening to her slap around Toronto's own paragon of "bringin' the crazy", Imam Steve Rockwell, is a segment worthy of much snorting and high-fives!  Even my 11-year-old, who is not the least bit interested in politics, thought this dude was seriously cracked.

Of course, what most people really want to know about the Libyan leader is whether he’s a complete loon… and reading Escape to Hell does tend to confirm the widespread suspicion that Qaddafi isn’t playing with a full deck. His writing has a rambling, stream-of-consciousness flavor reminiscent of Chairman Mao’s less coherent essays, suggesting that dictators are often edited with a very light hand. Combine this with his excursions into surrealism and frequent recourse to the high-ironic stance, and it’s often difficult to make head or tail of his work.

My steak was a vegetarian

Last night I had a beef dip sandwich for dinner.  It wasn't gourmet but it met the basic standards I require from all meals:  sloppy salty meat, drippy fatty cheese and some manner of bread.  The silly vegetables on top (fried onions) were tolerated only because they were adequately saturated in fat.

Lettuce is for rabbits and broccoli is best in a dish smothered in mayo, sour cream and cheddar cheese and served bubbling and hot, with tortilla chips.

Don't get me wrong,I do know how to eat properly.  I took nutrition in school, in preparation for a career in culinary arts.  I do buy veggies for the kids and I will even eat some in their presence (good example, and all) but if I had my way, all meals would come with the requisite starch and 2 meat servings...and salt.  That's it.

And nothing -- I mean nothing -- could sway me from a certain fatal heart attack, with the lure of Chickpea Cutlets, and such...

We try not to play favorites, but this is one of our babies and a recipe that we are sure will take over food blogs worldwide. I find it rather ironic that the people who decry the consumption of flesh so vehemently, spend so much time and energy trying to make their vegan dishes mimic realmeat.  I speculate it has less to do with healthy choices than it does with a pretentious longing to be part of the newest cool, and a cowardly squeamishness about eating cows.

"That's why we're going to go after aggressive sanctions. We haven't taken any options off the table. We are going to keep on pushing," Obama said.

Still awaiting word on when Obama will "run out of patience" with the kidnappings, suicide bombings and constant threats being waged from the other side of that border.

Colleen LaRose, according to a US court indictment, posted messages online under the name Jihad Jane, expressing her desire to participate in jihad, or holy war.

Arrested in October 2009, Ms LaRose had exchanged emails over 15 months to recruit fighters for "violent jihad".

Having left the US in August, by the end of September, she had allegedly written online that it would be "an honour & great pleasure to die or kill for" her intended spouse, the indictment said.
 
Ms LaRose's boyfriend said he never saw her display any interest in the Muslim veil
"Only death will stop me here that I am so close to the target!" she is accused of writing.

Is she being charged with sedition and treason, too?  Somehow I doubt it but she should be.
