Is Facebook Distracting Us From Porn?
Porn is and always has been a key component of the Internet -- 10% of all Web searches, according to Hitwise. But it used to be bigger -- and could be getting displaced by social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook.
As far as I'm concerned, Facebook is just a different kind of porn...only duller and with no sound. It's what I like to call "me porn", where you get to pour over how many friends you have, and how much time they spend sending you useless virtual trinkets and writing on your "wall". It lends glamorous relevancy to people who are too repressed to use the handycam for the real thing.
To extend the metaphor...I guess the R.I.P. Facebook sites, set up to mourn the latest tragic death of a teenage gang-banger, would be the social-networking version of a snuff film.
